General Cafeteria Information for Parents

GENERAL CAFETERIA INFORMATION TO PARENTS

BREAKFAST is at NO CHARGE to any student at the Elementary and Middle Schools!!!!!! We look forward to seeing everyone!

Both lunch and breakfast are on “offer versus serve” guidelines established by the federal government. At breakfast, 3 meal components including 4 items are offered. Students must take at least three of the four items and one item must be a fruit or juice. At lunch, 5 meal components are offered. Students may decline two of the five components but one of the components taken must be a fruit or vegetable. Federal guidelines state that the price of the meal shall not be affected if a student declines food items.

Federal guidelines state that milk is the only beverage required to be served as part of the regular reimbursable meal. Substitutions are made only if the student brings a written excuse from his or her physician stating the medical reason for the substitution and listing the substitution desired.

Parents are responsible for payment of any meals, ala carte items or extra items his or her child takes.

Each cafeteria has a computerized point-of-sale cash register system. Each student is assigned a 4-digit pin. The student punches his or her number into the keypad on the cafeteria line as he or she comes through with a meal or ala carte purchase to access his or her individual account. Each student’s account has a record of the appropriate status, account balance, grade level and other special information. The child’s status is not revealed when the child enters the account number, so there is no overt identification of the child’s meal status. Money for meal and ala carte purchases is to be pre-paid. CHARGES ARE ALLOWED FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY. Parents will receive a monthly letter sent home with his or her child if charges are owed. Skylert messages will be sent on Friday of each week for any charges over $2.00. IT IS THE PARENTS’ RESPONSIBILITY TO MONITOR HIS OR HER CHILD’S ACCOUNT AND TO MAKE SURE THERE IS MONEY IN THE ACCOUNT TO COVER ALL PURCHASES.

EFunds is an on-line payment system that is available for making deposits to your child’s account. You can access this link on the district web-site. There is a fee for making on-line deposits. However, you can set up an account to monitor your child’s cafeteria balance at no charge.

If you are applying for free or reduced meals, remember that there must be a completed application for each family. You must receive a letter from the school’s cafeteria manager stating your child’s status before the process is complete. If your child is to receive free meals because you are receiving TANF or SNAP (formerly Food Stamps) as of May 2017, you will receive a letter at the beginning of this school year. Until you receive a letter, YOU NEED TO SEND MONEY TO PAY FOR YOUR CHILD’S MEALS. If you have submitted an application and have not received a status letter within a week, call the school cafeteria manager to be sure she has received the application. You will speed up the process if your child takes the application directly to the cafeteria manager.
